The subtle changes which cities are undergoing today, and the radiation development from single center to multi-center, are accompanied by the needs of new visual order, namely cities are constantly producing new visual phenomenon -- events brimming everywhere constantly, intensive operation of traffic network, individual activities, the variety of commodities and fast and convenient logistics etc. All these constitute the charm of the city.
As a project of public art, it is no doubt that 2010 Expo Jing’an International Sculpture Project has added richness and diversity for the World expo culture. 2010 Expo Jing’an International Sculpture Project tries to analyze and interpret the issues of aesthetics such as modern urban public art and public aesthetic education, historical memory, daily experience, etc.
Different from the European urban culture, Shanghai urban culture has a specificity of overlap and miscellaneous—colonial culture— revolutionary culture — new modern culture. Today, as an international metropolic center, Jing’an takes “Shanghai regional culture”, and incarnates the cultural characteristic of compatibility of traditional culture and modern culture, high art and popular art enhancing each others’ beauty, education and aesthetic function fused together from their own history and reality. Of course, if you make public art blend in cities, the life, we must liberate public art from city’s boring and single situation, make public art no longer be excluded from the overall design of the ornament and be considered as ornament and decoration of the city.
In this sense, the theme of 2010 Expo Jing’an International Sculpture Project "City Fantasy" inevitability combines with the historical context and cultural reality, thinking the city public art development. Therefore, "City Fantasy" is formed by the three levels of "memory", "life" and "fantasy" to interpret the cultural connotation and meaning of Jing’an. Obviously, "memory", "life" and "fantasy" not only deal with history space, commercial space and life space, but also contains the analysis of past, present and future. Of course, we interpret Shanghai regional culture represented by Jing’an, with the method of visual art; it cannot be shown by the general mechanization method, but through the historical context, daily life, and personal perspective to deduce and make in-depth analysis. For example, park is a public space for enjoying daily life, the sculpture in the space expresses artist's imagination and creativity. And historical space (historical buildings and notable residence) connect the legends, stories and memory of Shanghai, and they reflect the changes and development of urban space. Today the new Shanghai image reflected specifically in business space of people’s needs of life reflects the new way of life and the new consumption concept.
Therefore, in 2010 Expo Jing’an International Sculpture Project, we have arranged different works to situations and conditions that are relative to three types of space to manifest cultural characteristics of openness, inclusiveness and multifariousness. 2010 Expo Jing’an International Sculpture Project altogether chose 31 artists from 8 countries and Hong Kong,Macao or Taiwan: 22 international artists, 7 domestic artists and 2 from Hong Kong,Macao or Taiwan, 68 artworks in total.
Most participating artists in 2010 Expo Jing’an International Sculpture Project adopt concise artistic language, which helps to build intimacy and communication with the mass. Whether it is pop or conceptual language, or whether it is minimalism or abstract style, these works combine serious cultural analysis with relaxed visual pleasure and sense of humor. And they create relevance with the audience’s leisure, relaxation, joy, enjoyment and thinking.

It is the target of social publicity and cultural commonality. Therefore, the implementation of 2010 Expo Jing’an International Sculpture Project not only reflects the people-oriented principle, enhance people’s sense of aesthetics, but also build the whole city community’s cultural image.
